The Salvadoran flag was opened in 1822, revoked in 1865, restored in 1912, and formally established as the national flag in the 1972 Constitution. The national flag is rectangular and the ratio of length to width is 9:5. From top to bottom, the flag is composed of three parallel and equal horizontal rectangles, blue, white and blue. The central part of the white part is painted with the national emblem pattern. Because El Salvador was a member of the former Central American Federation, its flag color is the same as that of the former Central American Federation. Blue symbolizes the blue sky and the sea, while white symbolizes peace.
